Fundamentals and replay analysis

Hello!

I continue to work on my M@A into archers with Vikings. However, I think I am making various fundamental mistakes and would like to see if you agree with my assessment or if there is something else you think I should focus on.

I have a couple recordings that can illustrate this.

Dark age:
I continue to clean up the opening as I often get suboptimal boar position under the TC. However, I think my main mistake is bad scouting of the enemy.

Feudal age:
I get my M@A to the enemy at about 11.30. However, if I see he is walled I try to cancel the upgrade and try to get double bit axe instead. I then try to get 2 archery ranges and black smith down as soon as I can to mass archers to attack. I often do not know how to best use these archers.

However, I think my main issue to focus on is incorrect econ distribution and getting housed

Castle age:
I am trying to get earlier ballistics as you recommended on another thread. I think this has helped me win some fights. However, I am still not sure how to best use my army and often lose much of it on failed raids/attacks on enemy econ.

Generally, speaking, I think my main mistake here is still correct econ distribution and secondary to this is map control.

Imperial age:
I have an ok early Imperial age. However, I often lose when gold starts to run out and I have not yet added the supporting trash units to my main gold Arbalest army. This when I have the advantage. If I am at a disadvantage I usually am unable to recover and lose in imperial age.

Replay where I lose:
www.dropbox.com/s/7ii2ypaelugb7iv/vs%20m...game.aoe2record?dl=0

I have a good advantage in castle age. In imperial I respond badly to an Eagle Warrior raid. Also I stopped continuous Vil production, was late adding production buildings, never added fourth TC. Opponent won with better mechanics and bigger eco.

Replay where I win:
www.dropbox.com/s/7ii2ypaelugb7iv/vs%20m...game.aoe2record?dl=0

Seemed like I had better mechanics than the opponent. Opponent also seemed to blunder with a knight switch from Skirmishers. Won due to better production, and winning a couple key fights to take map control

Im not an admin of this site , i am a player just like you and i have a few comments. My elo is slightly lesser(1272) than yours but i was practising the m@a archer build for a long time and struggling managing resources , i practised this build a lot with the AI to effectively learn to manage.
I can give a few pointers.
1) I think you put 3 on gold in dark age which is a lot. 2 is sufficient for man at arms upgrade and the militia.
2) you put 3 on berries, your food count was less.
when i go up to feudal i usually have around 240 food and 200 wood in the bank ... so i do m@a upgrade (100f) and create villager (50f) still have 90f in bank but i dont to double bit axe yet ... delay it a few seconds (its super imp but dont delay it too much but not as imp as vill prod.) bcoz villager production has to be maintained.
we need 6 on food for constatnt vill prod and i have 4 on berries and my sheeps are over. the ppl under Tc are onto straggler trees. If u have 2 (max 3) more farms then its fine initially ... you dont want to over extend on the farming initially otherwise your archery range will be delayed.

3) when going up i collect food with vills under tc then at 40% send 3 vills to make second lumber camp .. that way i would have enough food in the bank and good wood. If u have low food when u click up you will endup making more farms and that delays archery ranges ....
So i make 1 builder make archer range then another then blacksmith ... goes very smooth.
your end goal is to make 5 vills on each lumber camp and few on stragglers @ fefudal.
I have another builder make walls (aka palisades and houses <-- you got housed ) max 2 builders.

Those are good observations Shehbazthakur.

I think a week or so ago I started building my 3rd house with the 16th villager who usually would go to berries to complete the four vils there.

I have lately forgotten to add the 4th vil to berries and also retask the building vil.

No wonder I feel so food starved early feudal and cant get my M@A upgrade as easily as before

Also, I was feeling low on wood early feudal hence why I delayed my second lumber camp. It makes sense I was feeling low as given my low food prod I was feeling forced to get farms earlier.

The three vils on gold was either momentary or a multitasking failure.

I will try your recommendations on my next set of games.

Hey Scrum,
Do you need more analysis after shehbazthakurs analysis? Id be happy to look any question you still have.

Hi Jupe,

Yes, it would be great if you have some feedback.

I will continue to clean up my opening, however, I think there may be more fundamental issues to look into. I was wondering, given your experience, what your assessment of the main issues I had on each age were.

Maybe they are different to the ones I have outlined.

Hey Scrum.
I took a look an indeed there are small problems with the build. Men at arms is one of those builds that poor dark age resource gathering affects the feudal age economy and castle timing much more than with other standard builds.
Also keep in mind that getting the fastest attack timing with your men at arms is extremely important, they should reach enemy base at the time you reach feudal age optimally.

Against someone going pure archer it isn't bad idea to open full skirmishers. You can then switch back on gold later. There is a video not yet on a class on the site that explains this vimeo.com/454143970 (once it's added to the site the link won't work)

You don't want to be fighting your enemy just for the sake of fighting. Look for position to make damage, without being spotted. I think this is mistake you repeat in this game. I explain it (your recording) on this

For more archer usage watch the archer rush strategy video class. www.aoebuilds.com/aoe2-classes/course/archer-rush Especially ''attacking with archers'' and ''Archer rush SNEAK STYLE''

For Imperial play you made the mistake of not reacting fast enough to the eagle switch. You could see it coming a mile away (killed all his xbow, barracks in fron for him) I would've suggested to go for champions instead of berserkers, even longswords have bigger attack bonus (+6) vs eagles than berserkers (+2, +3 elite) and also with the new supplies tech + it being much harder to produce from castles. You also in no way reacted to the raiding going to your economy and they idled your farms for minutes! You not only need to get units to deal with them but also move your farm economy elsewhere, even your normal farm eco wasn't strong enough at that point.

Early imp i would've wanted to see more aggressive first castle. Also castling that center hill would've been crucial, as it's easy to controll the game from that hill to multiple sides.

Let me know if you have any other questions,

Jupe
