When to attack (M@A into archers)

Hello there!
I have been learning the M@A into Archers with Vikings for a few weeks now. I think I have the opening somewhat under control. However, I have difficulty determining when to attack after the men at arms get wiped out.
Should I attack with the first five archers?
What if the opponent is attacking?
How do you gauge when to move out?

I sometimes try to counter attack if I am being attacked and try to use gate walls/ buildings to stall the opponent while I raid with archers. However, many times the opponent gets to castle first and wipes out my archers with knights as I try to produce from two ranges. If I stay home, I feel I lose map control and eventually lose the game.

Is there any way I can attach replay? The max size allowed is too small for a replay.

Hey Scrum.

When you want to attack with your archers depends on few factors; what your opponent is making, did you go for 2 early ranges, or delayed ranges, are you walled or about to be walled? Also when you are planning on getting fletching plays some factor.

So let's say you get the early ranges up after man at arms. You have good pressure. Enemy went for same strategy, but you did the early ranges and maybe he was later into ranges, i would always then go and pressure even with your first archer and already combining it with your men at arms if they are still alive. This is one of those aggression that if you get good early attack, trade better with the men at arms, add your archers to the forward attack group and your opponent might already be out of it.

If you went for same strat, traded even i would mass up 4-6 archer, think then 1) can i damage him somewhere in a sneaky way? This means walking from the side to his woodline without being noticed, or maybe shooting the wood villagers from behind his woodline (incase he might be walled). If you could see yourself do damage with those without having to even face the enemy army and feel you are somewhat safe at home you should attack and try to time it with getting fletching too! If you don't see in that game situation being able to damage the opponent it's safer approach to stay at home while finnishing defences. Remember that most of the times your opponent won't be attacking too fast either so once you make an attack they usually just keep on chasing you around which then gives you the opportunity to attack with another group of archers somewhere else. It will also give you the information of his army location which gives you more time to prepare walls, or other defenses at home.

If against scouts try to group your few early archers(4-8) with spearman and send them forward. This will force your enemy to get something against the spearm, which usually means he has to commit to early range and get skirms out. You also should send spearman forward with your man at arms, if they are going scouts, you then could also send 1-2 archers with the spearman if you still have your men at arms alive to further pressure your opponent.

If you are against archers i highly recommend to go 1 range skirmishers, you could also send them forward even the 1st ones straight away, however if your enemy has his scout alive it's possible that he will snipe the skirms on the way, so in that case it might not be a good idea.

Let me know if you have any followup questions.

Thanks Jupe!

On how many spearmen should you invest before you would consider it is over committing?

If tou can’t wall and hes going scouts you need quite a few. Start by getting one on every resource, if you attack with 4-6 archers then 2 infront of those.
